Warwick Butler (left) is congratulated by Tumut Golf Club president Peter Linnegar.
TUMUT golfer Warwick Butler may not be living the dream . . . but he’s about to.
Butler is heading for the Open Championship at Royal Troon, thanks to a nationwide competition run by Golf Australia.
It was appropriately called ‘Play 9’ and each golfer who entered was asked to nominate for a nine-hole event.
It meant that each time a contestant played in any nine-hole event run by their club between February 26 and April 29, that member was automatically in the running to win.
Butler was one of two winners, with his prize a return trip for two to the UK, accommodation and transfers plus tickets to attend the first day of The Open Championship.
Besides watching the best players in the world in action, Butler also gets the opportunity to play in an international nine-hole event at this storied course where the likes of Bobby Locke, Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf, Tom Watson, Mark Calcavecchia and Justin Leonard won their Open titles.
Since moving from Roma in Queensland and joining the delightful Tumut course at the foot of the Snowy Mountains, along with his wife Ruth, Butler has found a happy home.
He has become an active member and a willing volunteer at the 18-hole Tumut Golf Club.
According to Golf Australia, Butler’s prize is a just reward for years of dedication to both the Roma and Tumut clubs.
