The 2016 Australian PGA Championship will capture the attention of the world with a prime position on the international golf schedule.

This year’s championship will be contested at RACV Royal Pines Resort from 1-4 December; the week after the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne.

The two week swing of golf down under is expected to attract many of the world’s best Professionals to Australian shores.

“Hosting tournaments the calibre of the World Cup of Golf and Australian PGA Championship in back-to-back weeks is a real coup for Aussie golf fans as the fields assembled for each tournament will be some of the best seen in Australia in recent times,” said Brian Thorburn, CEO of the PGA of Australia.

“It’s also a huge opportunity for many of the world’s best players who have competing in Australia on their bucket list. Now they will be able to take advantage of spending two weeks down under.”

“The Australian PGA Championship has a unique personality for a golf tournament; relaxed and family friendly it provides the perfect end of year event for players to compete for top prize money whilst also enjoying a holiday on the Gold Coast which is famous for fun.”

The 2016 Australian PGA Championship will also benefit from its position at the beginning of the European Tour’s 2017 schedule with players hoping to kick start their season down under.

“While players always enjoy the sites of the Gold Coast, on the course it’s serious business with European Tour players hoping to get an early boost on the Race to Dubai and Aussie players looking to earn a ticket onto one of the biggest Tour’s in the world,” added Thorburn.

“This mix of relaxed atmosphere with fierce competition is what makes the Australian PGA Championship such an exciting tournament for fans; they are able to watch world class golf whilst also mingling with the players post-round.”

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Kate Jones, said high calibre sporting events like the Australian PGA Championship inspired visitors to experience the best address on earth, Queensland.

“It’s fantastic to welcome the PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour back for the 2016 Australian PGA Championship, with this signature Gold Coast event in a prime position on the world golfing calendar,” Minister Jones said.

“This event will complete a sensational year on the It’s Live! in Queensland calendar, delivering on Tourism and Events Queensland’s aim to deliver the best live events in the best destinations.”

Following the Perth International in March, the Australian PGA Championship will be the second tournament co-sanctioned by the European Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia in 2016.

Keith Waters, Chief Operating Officer for the European Tour, said: “We are naturally delighted to be returning to Australia and to have an opportunity to further develop our partnership with the PGA of Australia.

“The European Tour is a thriving global brand, and we hope our presence in Australia can elevate the Australian PGA Championship to new heights. With the World Cup in Melbourne the week before the PGA returns to the RACV Royal Pines Resort in Queensland, we hope to see some of the best players in the world competing in Australia at the end of the year.”

The Australian PGA Championship will be played at RACV Royal Pines Resort from 1-4 December and will be co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour for the second consecutive year.

The Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland as well as the City of Gold Coast and Gold Coast Tourism proudly supports the Championship.
