WHEN it comes to historical buildings, Ayutthaya, Thailand is well known for temples and palaces. In addition, a variety of food offerings and options is another magnet for visitors to the region, with the suggestion being to plan an eating trip whenever visiting Ayutthaya.

From fresh river prawns, fish, boat noodles (Kuay Teow Reua) and even the never-miss dessert Roti Saimai (cotton candy wrap), an outstanding variety is on the menu at the many restaurants and cafes in Ayutthaya, located next to the river, while Suriyanchantra Restaurant offers beautiful views and a relaxing atmosphere.

The capital one of Thailand’s historical and majestic highlights, then known as the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya was one of the biggest cities in Southeast Asia and a regional power for 417 years.

Visitors can explore and appreciate Thai history in Ayutthaya, which is only 86 kilometres, or about an hour drive north of Bangkok. Marvel at its grandeur reflected through numerous magnificent temples and ruins concentrated in and around the city, located on an ‘island’ surrounded by the Chao Phraya, Pa Sak and Lopburi rivers.

The Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park in the heart of Ayutthaya city is a UNESCO’s World Heritage site and a wonder to behold. The ruins that now remain, many of which have been painstakingly restored, have been granted World Heritage status by UNESCO.

The architecture of Ayutthaya is a fascinating mix of Khmer and early Sukhothai styles. Some cactus-shaped obelisks, called prangs, denote Khmer influence and look something like the famous towers of Angkor Wat. The more pointed stupas are ascribed to the Sukhothai influence.

There are boat rides, tours of Ayutthaya Historical Park as well as River Cruises available in Ayutthaya, offering a unique way to explore the city and its historical landmarks.

Some boat tours take visitors around the island, providing close-up views of temples like Wat Chaiwatthanaram, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, and others, while various tour operators offer boat cruises along the Chao Phraya River to enjoy scenic views of the historical temples and ruins from the water. These cruises often last about 1-2 hours.

Ayutthaya also offers a wide range of accommodations, from luxurious riverside resorts such as Sala Ayutthaya and Ayutthaya Grand Hotel, to budget-friendly guesthouses. There are also charming homestays and boutique hotels for a more local experience. Whether looking for comfort, affordability, or a unique cultural stay, Ayutthaya has something for every traveller.
