BUBBLY, effervescent, ever-smiling and above all a golfer of enormous talent.
The loss of 24-year-old Doey Choi in a motor bike accident last month left the golf world in mourning at the tragic loss of such a popular and talented young golfer.
Her shattered coach John Serhan told 7NEWS that Choi was an “effervescent character who always seemed to be smiling”.
“It’s just such a tragic waste of so much talent,” said Serhan.
The WPGA, along with Golf Australia and the PGA of Australia, released a statement pointing out that Choi was a “tremendous golfer who proudly represented Australia”.
Doey Choi, the golfing world is mourning the tragic loss of a popular and talented young golfer.
“Doey’s unexpected passing is a profound loss not just for the golf community, but for all who knew her,” said Golf NSW chairman Michael Medway.
“Not only was Doey a remarkable player, but she was also a valued friend to many of us.
“Her bubbly smile, infectious personality and genuine warmth towards her peers will be sorely missed.
“Doey played our great game with passion, determination and grace.”
In 2019, Doey “achieved the ultimate recognition in Australian amateur golf” by competing in the Queen Sirikit Cup before deciding to turn professional in 2021.
“Doey will be remembered for her spirit, the joy she brought to so many of us and her contribution to golf in our state,” said Medway.
“Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and loved ones as they come to terms with this unimaginable loss.
“Words cannot fully express the depth of sorrow we feel.”
Choi’s career highlights included a NSW amateur title at the age of just 13.
She also won the 2019 New Zealand Amateur Crown as well as multiple national team titles.
Choi was a member at Sydney’s Concord Golf Club and first caught the eye of the professional world when she led the Australian Ladies Classic at Bonville International when it was a co-sanctioned event with the Ladies European Tour and the ALPG.
In her post-round interview she revealed Rory McIlroy was her favourite golfer and Conor McGregor her favourite sports person “because of his mindset and what he’d achieved from where he used to be.”
Having turned professional, the golfing world will never get the chance to see how far her talents would take her.
