The WA Golf Club has introduced a new program for women designed to bridge the gap between lessons and playing the game with confidence.

ONE of golf’s biggest challenges isn’t getting people to pick up a club for the first time, it’s helping them feel comfortable enough to take the next step and head out onto the golf course.

The Western Australian Golf Club (WAGC) has recognised that challenge and is tackling it head-on with a new women’s program designed to bridge the gap between lessons and playing the game with confidence.

For many women, the fundamentals of golf are often learned on the driving range or practice facilities. But standing on the first tee for the first time can be a completely different experience. Questions about where to stand, what club to hit, how scoring works and even simple matters of etiquette can sometimes be enough to discourage newcomers.

That’s where WA Golf Club’s new eight-week women’s program comes in.

Designed to move beyond traditional coaching sessions, the program provides a welcoming and supportive introduction to on-course golf. Participants learn while they play, accompanied by experienced WAGC professionals who guide them through the many aspects of the game that can’t always be learned on the practice tee.

The emphasis is on participation, enjoyment and confidence building.

The program goes beyond swing mechanics, giving participants practical experience with scoring, golf etiquette, course management, handicaps and rules of golf – all within a relaxed environment where questions are encouraged and confidence grows naturally.

Importantly, the program also introduces women to club golf and everything that comes with it.

One of the great strengths of golf is the sense of community it creates. Friendships are formed, playing groups develop and many golfers discover a social network that lasts for years. The WAGC’s program provides opportunities for participants to meet existing members, utilise the club’s practice facilities and clubhouse and gain a genuine understanding of what club membership is all about.

The club’s initiative reflects a broader trend occurring throughout Australian golf as more women discover the sport and clubs work to provide welcoming pathways into membership and regular play. Creating an environment where new golfers feel comfortable, supported and encouraged is critical to ensuring the game’s continued growth.

The next intake begins in the first week of August, with participants able to choose between Tuesday sessions commencing at 11am or Thursday sessions beginning at 3.30pm.

Both options run across eight weeks, with a two-week break after the first four weeks, allowing participants time to practise and consolidate what they have learned before returning for the second half of the program.

No previous club golf experience is required and there is no expectation beyond a willingness to learn and enjoy the experience.

For women who have completed lessons and are wondering what comes next, the WAGC may well have the answer. This innovative program provides a comfortable pathway onto the golf course, into club life and, perhaps, into a lifelong love affair with the game.
