MOST golfers who take up the game of golf will eventually start dreaming about getting a hole-in-one.
For many golfers it’s the ultimate prize.
Well, the dream became reality for one young Collangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club (CTHGC) junior member when he aced the seventh hole on the River Course.
Eight-year-old Ollie Moore stunned golfers on the eighth tee when they witnessed his 170-metre tee shot land nicely on the green before finding the bottom of the cup. And he achieved it with his trusty driver.
There were cheers all round for the CTHGC junior, who may be the youngest ever to land a hole-in-one at the club.
“Hole-in-one records are kept, but not the age of the golfer,” said CTHGC development manager Nicole James.
“We think Ollie, who has a handicap of 28, may be the youngest ever player to score an ace at the club.”
Ollie’s dad Matt said his son first started hitting balls for fun when he was five years old.
“This sparked an interest in golf,” Matt said.
Eighteen months ago Ollie joined the club’s junior clinics and later became a junior member.
“Ollie plays golf most afternoons with his dad and is having regular lessons from head professional Jared Love where he is developing his skills and passion for the game of golf,” Ms James added.
“Jared, while coaching another junior who has had five holes-in-one, joked with Ollie the day before his ace that he only coached juniors who had scored an ace and told him he’d better hurry up and get one.
“Of course, they all laughed and then Ollie went out the next day and had a hole-in-one.”
Jared Love said his young protégé was a talented player with heaps of potential.
“Given that he is only eight years old, the lessons have really helped him with his concentration,” he said.
“We have spent a lot of time developing Ollie’s short game, which has helped him reduce his handicap by eight strokes in the last two months.
“It will be exciting to see how Ollie’s game develops over the coming years and all CTHGC members will be watching him with great interest.”
