A CHAMPION veteran golfer in three decades came within 20cms of the ultimate prize – a hole-in-one – which would have seen him drive away in a brand-new car.
Playing in the Sunshine Coast District Veterans Golf Association Championship at Peregian Golf Club, Alan Taylor, who plays out of Maroochy River Golf Club, was the big winner.
With more than 100 players from 10 clubs in the district represented on the day, Alan was the only player to shoot an even-par round.
And he was the only player to shoot a score lower than his age (75) and he came within inches of winning a brand-new Toyota Corolla courtesy of sponsor John Madill’s Toyota when his tee shot stopped 20cms from the cup.
Over the past 25 years, the perpetual trophy, donated by John Madill’s Toyota, has seen numerous winners from most of the clubs on the Sunshine Coast.
This year was a significant year though as Alan Taylor became the first player to have won the SCDVGA championship once in each of the last three decades.
For the record, he won the championship in 2002, 2014 and 2021.
The championship was played in fine weather with the A grade players going head-to-head in the gross and nett events while the B and C grade players competed for the best stableford scores.
Other winners included: A grade nett winner, Barry Reilly (Nambour); runner-up, John Parsons (Peregian). B grade winner, Ross Anderson (Pelican Waters); runner-up, David Findlay (Peregian). C grade winner, Garry Elliott (Peregian); runner-up, Alan Cove (Gympie).
