LEON Trenerry, the former South African who moved to Australia in 2021 in search of a better life, is understandably chuffed with his performances on the Queensland associates circuit in 2022.
After playing 30 events, he topped the Order of Merit.
Now he’s looking to play more pro-ams across the country and is counting down the days until he’s able to pursue his real goal – taking on some of Australia’s most revered golfers on the national Legends Tour.
“I’ll be eligible to play in just over two years,” said Trenerry who, at 47, is one of Australia’s oldest associates.
After completing his first year as a trainee at Brookwater, Trennery recently relocated to Oxley, on Brisbane’s southside.
“I’m hoping to play more events on the pro-am circuit this year,” said Trennery, whose performances in 2022 placed him 16th on the national standings, and gave him a better chance of gaining starts in those events.
Because of his experience as a professional golfer in South Africa, where he played for six years on the Sunshine Tour, Trennery is required to complete only two years as an associate.
He says he doesn’t particularly like practising, much preferring to tune his game by playing nine holes late in the afternoon.
“I’ve always been just a proficient golfer,” he said. “Nothing special – sort of middle of the road. I’m old school. I don’t hit it far enough to get into much trouble.
“That’s why I’m looking forward to playing on the Legends Tour,” he said. “They don’t hit it as far as these young fellows.”
