Old Course Vilamoura, just 20 minutes from Faro Airport.

SOME destinations are defined by their courses. Portugal is defined by the way golf fits naturally into the landscape, the rhythm of the day, and the character of each region. From Lisbon to the Algarve, the game unfolds differently from one course to the next, yet always with a strong sense of place.

Just outside the capital, PGA Aroeira Lisboa, the only PGA National Portugal, often referred to as the “Wentworth of Lisbon”, stretches through a dense pine forest only moments from the Atlantic coast. Its two recently renovated courses move naturally through the landscape, asking different questions from one hole to the next.

Further south, Palmares offers a distinctly different challenge. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., its 27 holes move seamlessly between dunes, parkland and clifftop terrain, with constantly changing views over the Bay of Lagos. Beyond the fairways, Palmares continues to evolve as a leading lifestyle destination, with luxury accommodation options, its award-winning clubhouse, and the recently opened Preceito, where contemporary Portuguese cuisine takes centre stage.

In Vilamoura, located 20 minutes from Faro Airport, the game is shaped by heritage. Under the unified identity of Vilamoura Golf, the destination brings together the Old Course Vilamoura Pinhal, Millennium and Laguna, each with its own style and character, alongside The Els Club Vilamoura, the Algarve’s first private members’ club and one of the most anticipated new chapters in European golf.

On the eastern Algarve, Monte Rei remains one of the country’s purest golfing experiences. Portugal’s only Jack Nicklaus Signature course, the North Course winds through rolling valleys and native woodland and is currently undergoing a renovation programme aimed at further refining the playing experience while preserving the character of the original layout.

In Portugal, golf becomes part of the rhythm of the destination — shaped by long days on the course, changing light throughout the round, and layouts that keep golfers coming back, time and time again.
