Last month, we tested the latest tour-calibre, four-piece golf balls from Mizuno, the RB TOUR and RB TOUR X, touted for their optimum greenside feel and excellent performance in the wind.
12 years in the making, the new ball is the result of rigorous wind tunnel testing at Mizuno’s test facility in Japan. Inside Golf visited the facility last year, and we were blown away (pardon the pun) by the meticulous attention to detail and painstaking testing that goes into the testing of their golf balls (like all their other equipment). Mizuno is famous for only releasing new equipment if there is a significant improvement, so you can rest assured that there is some game-changing technology in play with these balls.
Mizuno’s new Cone (C) Dimple is designed to create more “trigger points” to keep fast-flowing air close to the ball’s surface for longer periods of time. With 360 of these dimples covering the surface of the ball, it helps to reduce drag, and strengthening trajectory.
And in our opinion, Mizuno certainly have achieved that. Off the tee, we found the RB Tour and RB Tour X to launch with a solid, piercing trajectory that carried for an extremely long time. In truth, the ball went a very, VERY long way. And not just with the driver, but also with the long irons and woods – the distance gains over our previous balls were significant. And there was plenty of control and shot-shaping available with both models.
Closer to the greens, the high-traction Urethane cover resulted in soft and responsive approaches and chips/pitches, with plenty of spin when required (one shot in particular created so much backspin that our entire group let out a collective “Wow!”). Putting was a dream with them, as they feel both soft, and yet crisp, on impact. This really helps boost confidence on the greens.
The two models feature the same technology, with one main difference: The RB Tour model features a very soft compression for lower driver spin (suiting more downward angles of attack), whereas the RB Tour X is geared more towards mid-driver spin for flat to upward attack angles.
Overall, we loved these balls, and we highly recommend you give them a serious consideration if you are looking for a high-performance, high-tech golf ball to lift your game.
