World No.8 Brooke Henderson excited for Adelaide return

Canadian sensation Brooke Henderson is coming back to Adelaide.

The world No.8 had a breakout 2016 on the LPGA Tour, including winning her first major championship.

Henderson, 19, recorded an incredible 15 top-10 finishes in her first full year on the world stage, including a charging T9 finish at The Grange in the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open.

And the pocket powerhouse, whose upbeat and friendly manner won the hearts of South Australian fans in 2016, can’t wait to come back from February 16-19.

“I’m really looking forward to returning to The Royal Adelaide Golf Club in February,” Henderson enthused in committing to the 2017 championship, fully sanctioned by the LPGA Tour.

“Last year was my first visit to Australia and it was one of my favourite stops on tour. I finished in the top 10 and I’ll aim even higher this time around!”

Henderson joins a field already containing world No.1 Lydia Ko, world No.2 Ariya Jutanugarn, defending champion Haru Nomura and top-ranked Australian trio Minjee Lee, five-time champ Karrie Webb and Su Oh.

Tournament director Trevor Herden was thrilled with Henderson’s commitment.

“Brooke was a delight last year with not only the way she played, but in the way she engaged with all who came to watch,” Herden said.

“When you throw in her dynamic swing and attacking style, it’s easy to see why she’s already a fan favourite.”

Henderson surged as high as No.2 in the Rolex Rankings when she defended her Cambia Portland Classic in July, less than a month after her pulsating KPMG Women’s PGA Championship win in a playoff over Ko.

Only Jutanugarn had more top-10 finishes than Henderson last year and her consistency took the Ontario resident all the way to No.3 in the LPGA Tour’s Race to the CME Globe.

The ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open is one of a series of world-class events in South Australia. The summer calendar — including everything from the Santos Tour Down Under and Clipsal 500 Adelaide to the Fringe, Adelaide Festival and WOMADelaide — is especially popular. South Australia was named Best Events State at the 2016 Australian Event Awards, the second year running it has won the accolade.
