Gary Ablett Junior will make a brief return to his old stomping ground next Sunday to take part as a Team Captain for the Surf Coast Knockout, a world first golf tournament being staged by the PGA Tour of Australasia at The Sands Torquay.

Ablett, a keen golfer, will be joined at The Sands Torquay by new Gold Coast Suns teammate and former Rugby League player Karmichael Hunt who on the day will represent Host Plus as Team Captains as the pros compete for their share of the prize money on offer.

The Surf Coast Knockout is certain to attract much attention with a world-first combination of strokeplay and matchpay being trialed for the Tour event.

The final day will see 32 players compete head-to-head over six holes, with ties to be decided by a specially designed knockout hole.

Geelong Player Joel Selwood will also be at the tournament as Team Captain for the Cotton On Foundation, the Charitable partner for the Surf Coast Knockout.

Former Geelong Captain Tom Harley will also make his way to Torquay representing Team Swisse alongside Elka Whalan (nee Graham.)

Along the way they will all be cheering on pros the likes of Australian golfing legends Peter Senior, Craig Parry and Peter O’Malley, and local Melbourne hopefuls Alistair Presnell and Matthew Griffin.

Also in the field will be two time European Tour winner Jean Van de Velde who is flying out from France to participate in the event which has already attracted international attention for its break with tradition.

A free event, the Surf Coast Knockout will be played at The Sands Torquay from January 20-23, 2011.

In a world first, the first three rounds of the Surf Coast Knockout will be contested under stroke play conditions, while the winner will ultimately be decided on Sunday by a reduced match play format.

The PGA’s broadcast partner Network 10 will broadcast the Surf Coast Knockout on Sunday 23rd January live from 12.00pm –5.00pm on Network 10, and from 12.00pm –7.00pm on OneHD.
