 Great golf in Victoria isn’t limited to the Mornington Peninsula or the Sandbelt. A short trip down the famed Surf Coast offers a variety of challenging and picturesque seaside courses that offer a true test of golf. The Stuart Appleby-designed Sands Torquay is one of these courses. Though still a relatively young course, it has all the hallmarks of a world-class facility, and will no doubt become a favoured destination by social and casual players, as well as those looking for a relaxing getaway in a top-quality resort.

 While Victoria's best golf courses are generally found in Melbourne's Sandbelt or along the Mornington Peninsula, a new course in Melbourne's outer west, Eynesbury, is beginning to turn some heads in the social golfing community. The recent host of the Victorian Social Golf Club Championships (VSGCC), Eynesbury's course and homestead offer an endearing combination of challenging, heart-pounding golf, surrounded by a tranquil Aussie bushland setting. It's becoming the latest "must-play" course for any social golf calendar.

 “When golf ceases to be fun it ceases to be golf.” I can’t recall exactly where I read that but the quote came back to me as we made our way around The Legends Course at Moonah Links. I had played the Open course once before and while “The Leviathan” (as designer PeterThomson likes to call it) has a certain masochistic appeal, fun is not generally a word one would associate with it. It’s younger brother, on the other side of the clubhouse, is a totally different kettle of fish. The Open course was designed to test the game’s elite while The Legends was designed for the rest of us and both do their job well.

 Melbourne’s south east corridor can add another quality golf course to its ever-expanding resume. With a population explosion throughout this area in the last 10 years -- coupled with the recently-completed Eastlink bypass -- entrepreneurs and designers alike have taken advantage of the course-friendly land available and some excellent tracks have emerged. Greg Norman’s latest venture -- Settlers Run Golf and Country Club is no exception. A short 40-minute drive from Melbourne CBD, this young course has quickly gained a reputation as one of Melbourne’s premier venues.
