Melbourne is set to have its fourth Greg Norman-designed golf course.
Eastern Golf Club has announced Norman and his design team will build the club’s new course at a site adjacent to the recently completed Yering Meadows Golf Club near Croydon. Club manager Ben Telley expects work to commence mid next year, once all the approvals have been completed. Eastern Golf Club is yet to finalise whether they build more than 18 holes on the site, but are certain to create a facility that incorporates more than just golf. “In today’s market we know the golf course has to be a part of what we offer while remaining our core product,” he told Inside Golf. “It will be a premium golf course. One that is able to exceed the expectation of our members.” Eastern Golf Club members gave the green light to sell the club’s current site in Doncaster last year. It’s believed the course will be turned into a residential estate, pending council approval. Like many golf clubs, Eastern has had to work hard to retain its membership in the slowing market. Telley is confident the club’s new home will reignite interest in golf membership by offering a multi purpose clubhouse and additional recreational facilities. “We’re confident we’ll create one of Melbourne’s best courses. It’s a stunning parcel of land and we’re excited to have Norman doing the design.” Norman’s other Victorian courses are Sanctuary Lakes, Settlers Run and the Moonah course at The National Golf Club on the Mornington Peninsula.
