The sign on arrival at the first tee of Bethpage State Park’s Black Golf Course in Farmingdale on Long Island in New York tells the story. “Warning the Black Course is an extremely difficult course which we recommend only for highly skilled golfers.” Such a warning sign is of little deterrence however to the hordes of golfers who flocked to Bethpage in the lead-up to the 2002 US Open and appear likely to do the same in 2009.

I’ve been following with interest the efforts of the Australian PGA and
a number of partner nations and organisations to drive OneAsia, a
professional tour designed to offer a lucrative circuit for players of
the region. Not surprisingly the early manoeuvres have seen them hit more than a
few hurdles and butt heads with the Asian PGA Tour in what has been a
public spat.

As someone who has attended countless professional golf tournaments either as a caddie, a commentator or a journalist I have never really stopped to think of the interest there might be by the general public in just what goes on behind the scenes in tournament golf. It has dawned on me that such a subject might make an interesting story for Inside Golf.

The recent furore over Tiger Wood’s caddie, Steve Williams’ rather candid comments at a luncheon in New Plymouth in New Zealand has died down to a large extent, but the reaction to those comments and the manner in which he was castigated by many makes an interesting study.
