Alistair Presnell believes he’s a strong chance to gain his PGA Tour card in 2011 after securing an impressive one shot victory at the Victorian PGA Championship in Melbourne. The 30-year-old set a new course record on Sandhurst Club’s North course with a final round 12-under 60 to hold off overnight leaders Kurt Barnes and fellow Victorian David Bransdon. And the Huntingdale member could have done better. A birdie on the 17th from inside two metres would have elevated him into the tour record books with no player yet to post a 59. Ernie Els shot a 60 in the Heineken Classic in 2004 while Paul Gow did the same in 2001 Canon Challenge. “A 59 would have been great, but I’ll take a 60 and the Victorian PGA trophy,” he told Inside Golf. “To be honest I didn’t really expect to win from six shots back, but the putts just kept dropping “It was just one of those days.” The Victorian PGA title represents an important result for Presnell who failed to capitalise on his 2009 Moonah Classic win by securing a top 25 finish on the Nationwide Tour. But he’s confident of a breakthrough this year. “I’m certainly a lot more prepared. “Last year was my first year in the United States and it was a huge learning curve. “I feel that I’m more ready this year.” Presnell went into 2009 with a better than average chance of securing his PGA Tour card. But he struggled in the United States and soon after returning home suffered a back injury during the Australian PGA Championship in Queensland. His win at Sandhurst Club earned him $16,500. And he’s already amassed more than $30,000 with solid results at the Moonah Classic and NZ PGA Championship. “The four weeks I took off to work on my back and the run of good results is just what I need. “Hopefully next year I’ll be on the PGA Tour. That’s what I’ve been working towards.”
