Golf Australia is proposing a radical change in the way golf handicaps are calculated. Here’s what could be in store for golfers across the country.
Golf Australia’s director of championships Trevor Herden told Inside Golf the former world number one was available on December 3.
But he said negotiations were still in progress and a final decision wouldn’t be made until July.
“We’re well down the track in talking to a number of players, but no final announcements will be made until the British Open,” he said.
“Obviously we’d love to see Greg playing again. He’s a major drawcard for any golf tournament.
“But we’re also talking with Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy.”
Herden admitted there were several factors that determined whether some players could tee up in the national championship. He said their performances at the end of a season was a factor.
“A lot of players need to have a really good run at the end of the season before they put their hand up.
“But generally, most players are confirmed at the British Open.”
This year’s Australian Men’s Open is at New South Wales Golf Club from December 3 to 6.
The championship is contracted to stay in New South Wales for three years under an agreement with the New South Wales Government.
In 2011, the championship is likely to return to Moonah Links, the venue in 2003 and 2005, to coincide with the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne.
