"We're a social group with more," is how David Rushmore describes his 'Tour Fore Golfers', a Queensland-based social club in the state's south east.
Co-founded by Rushmore and fellow golfer Nathan McCabe in early 2008, the Tour Fore Golfers (or 'The Tour' as it is affectionately referred) was established with the aim of offering golfers of all levels an affordable golfing alternative with flexibility and choice -- where players compete for fantastic prizes on a regular basis. Two years on, it has grown to a point where over 200 registered golfers have played in a 'Tour' event, with an average of about 60 players turning up to each golf day. With numbers like this, the club is becoming one of the larger independent social groups in the state, and has created such a following that they've even nabbed Callaway as a Prize Sponsor. ‘The Tour’ season comprises 20 events played on some of the best courses in Queensland. Throughout the year, 'The Tour' keeps players statistics, has its own Order of Merit, and culminates in the annual Club Championships, which includes 4 rounds at local courses -- neatly scheduled during the weeks of the Majors on the PGA Tour, adding a bit of extra fun and excitement to the tournament. "In April this year, the first round of our club championships will be played at Club Pelican," explains Rushmore. "This event corresponds with the Masters, and we will be playing for the highly prized ‘Black Jacket’. This event proved very popular last year and was won by Brendan Griffin with 37 points. We also have a 4BBB Championships to be played at Brookwater and a teams challenge to correspond with this year’s presidents cup." The key to the success of The Tour is in their flexibility and value. Golfers can play in as few or as many rounds as they like, with no limitations or obligations. They cater for golfers of all abilities -- from beginners, to single-figure markers, to local PGA Pros -- and due to their large group bookings have been able to secure heavily-discounted green fees, which gives all players tremendous value for their dollar. And while approximately half of 'The Tour' players are also active members of various golf clubs in South East Queensland, the group offers the opportunity for individual/social players to obtain and maintain an official Golf Australia handicap -- an attractive option to players who either aren't members at a home course, have just moved from interstate, or are simply wanting to expand their social golf circle and play in competitive events. "I think we offer a quality golfing experience," adds Rushmore, "and we have received great support from our members, sponsors and the golf clubs. We only wish that we could have more golfers come join us and experience ‘The Tour Fore Golfers’ concept for themselves." Membership in The Tour Fore Golfers is free. Players only pay for their green fees/competitions entries, and the (optional) Golf Australia Handicap fee. For more information: http://www.thetour.com.au
