The magnificent Mornington Peninsula will once again be on show to golfers from around Australia and overseas as the highly-anticipated Seventh Annual Mornington Peninsula Golf Classic tees off from 2-7 October.

The golf extravaganza is regularly recognised as one of the most enjoyable and best-value events on the annual amateur golfing calendar, and will see men and women golfers play some of Australia’s top courses in a 72-hole graded individual stableford tournament, while also enjoying a fun and friendly atmosphere as they meet new friends, or catch up with friends made from previous Classics.

This year’s Classic is sponsored by Mornington Peninsula Shire, and will rotate among some of the best courses that the Mornington Peninsula has to offer, including three of Australia’s Top 12 Public Access courses.

Portsea Golf Club, St Andrews Beach, Moonah Links (Legends), and Sorrento Golf Club will all be in pristine condition to excite the morning and afternoon fields from Monday 3 October to Thursday 6 October. Optional golf on the opening (2 October) and the closing (7 October) days is available at a number of the other Mornington Peninsula courses.

THE COURSES:

Billed as Australia’s #1 golf destination, the scenic Mornington Peninsula is well known for the number of quality golf courses ranging from coastal links to resort style layouts. Here are the courses on offer for this year’s event:

Portsea Golf Club

“Portsea stimulates me. It is in every way a champion’s course.” – Peter Thomson

Set amongst rolling sand dunes and coastal vegetation with spectacular views across Port Phillip Bay, the recently redesigned 18-hole layout has fast draining fairways and is kept in fantastic playing condition all year round. Following a 10-year, $20million redevelopment project, the course, clubhouse and 24-room resort facility have made the club the envy of many, and has become one of the standout “Stay and Play” facilities in the country.

St Andrews Beach

Golfers sing high praise for this Tom Doak-designed beauty, which is rated the number 4 Public Access course in Australia. Doak’s design philosophies and the nature of the land provide a unique golfing experience with generous fairways and spectacular greens.  The course is a true challenge for experienced golfers yet it is also still extremely playable and fun for social golfers. www.standrewsbeachgolf.com.au.

Moonah Links (Legends)

The Legends Course offers a friendly golfing experience for players of all ages and abilities. The course is a loop of 18 holes that generally follow the valleys through a variety of landscapes ranging from ancient Moonah woodlands to open links land. The fairways are generous and the putting surfaces gentle, but the bunkering style is bold and wild in appearance.

Sorrento Golf Club

“Days of golf at Sorrento are high on the list of sporting pleasures. I would rather be there than at Carnoustie, Gleneagles, Pebble Beach or Pinehurst.” – Peter Thomson

The Sorrento Golf Club enjoys a special reputation within Victoria as one of its premier courses. This wonderful sandbelt golf course is always beautifully presented with groomed greens and couch fairways providing plenty of challenge for golfers of all standards.

A private golf club with over a hundred years of history, 2016 Classic players will be truly delighted to play this gem under Tournament conditions.
