Portsea

The course was constructed on land that had been used to mine sand 10 years previously.  The regeneration of this land has not only provided a number of environmental benefits to the area, it also formed the optimum base for a golf course – sand.

Manly Golf Club

 

The new Manly Golf Club course layout is undoubtedly the most exciting project in Sydney at the present time, with Peter Thomson due to complete his total rebuild of all 18 holes in June this year.  The new landscape has created huge interest with the introduction of extensive waterways, estuaries, dynamic green complexes, strategic bunkering and a completely new course routing.    The proof is in the pudding: current members are ecstatic with the new design and membership is flourishing.

Founded in 1903, Manly Golf Club is one of Sydney’s original foundation clubs and is steeped in tradition.   Their manicured fairways have hosted many of golf’s immortals in the sixties, seventies and eighties.  In 1971, in the NSW Open, Jack Nicklaus laid claim to the course record with a brilliant round of 62 that still stands to this day, while in 1978 Greg Norman fired a fine 64.
