The 17th at Yowani is well guarded by a ball-grabbing dam

On a recent trip to the ACT, we were fortunate enough to have a quick play on this enjoyable track. This 6300-metre par-72 championship layout is certainly one of the more enjoyable inland courses in the area, and requires solid ballstriking if you want to do well.

Designed by James Herd Scott in 1954, the course features tight, tree-lined fairways and soft, playable greens. While many of the holes are relatively straight, it also features some surprisingly solid dog-legs that will keep the big-hitters at bay. A great example of this is the 333m Par-4 2nd hole, which bends nearly 90 degrees to the right, and has plenty of overhanging branches to contend with.  Your drive here must be exact –hit it short of the bend and you’ll have little chance of making the green in 2. Hit it too long off the tee and you’ll be through the fairway (and likely in the strategically-placed bunker).

There is also a bit of water to contend with at Yowani. Most notably on the 16th and 17th holes.

The 16th is a solid 170m par-3 that is basically all carry over a dam.  If you stay dry on that hole, then you must contend with the 345m par-4 17th, the green of which is closely guarded by an extension of the same dam. Your ball-retriever will be your most-used club for these two holes.

Overall, we found Yowani to be a solid, enjoyable course that caters to everyone. The clubhouse facilities are top-notch, the staff are extremely friendly, and the vibe of the place is relaxing and comfortable.
